Although many things still remain the same, military gear is constantly changing. I think this can be said for many things that people are doing these days. For example you may use a plain instead of a horse now, but in the end you are still traveling. I wrote this article talk about the many different types of gear that past and present warriors wore in combat.

Many things about military gear are still exactly the same. For example, soldiers still fight with deadly weapons and wear protective gear. Also soldiers still undergo rigorous training and are still viewed as heros by the ones they are called on to defend.

You’ll see the big variances in the way the new gear and training has developed over the years. Warriors now have access to weapons that can crush thousands of enemies in one blow. The new technology has led to different types of training to be lengthened or shortened depending on the needs. Firing a rifle takes much less skill than fending and stabbing with a medieval weapon. Soldiers today only spend about a week or two in training with their weapon while ancient soldiers may have sparred with each other each and every day. Also todays soldiers do not need to be as physically fit as the soldiers that needed to wield swords after marches that may have lasted months.

The protective gear of todays soldiers does consist of something to protect the body, and something to protect the head, but the similarities end there. For example if a modern day soldier were to use a piece of roman armor to deflect a bullet, he would never live to see another day. Medieval armors should be left to plays and costume parties rather than combat situations. The newer gear is not invulnerable, but it is much more sturdy than the armors and helmets of the middle ages.

Although gear has come a long way, it will never fully reach a plateau. The need for better soldier gear will not end until the last army has completely disbanded.

While it was technically established in July 1940, the SOE (Special Operations Executive) had come together in 1938 with the merger of three current, top secret departments following Germany annexed Austria. Churchill’s Secret Army was ordered to “Set Europe Ablaze”.

SOE operatives were directed to several Nazi occupied countries to both cause chaos behind German lines and in addition start to find local resistance groups they may work with once the moment for invasion arrived.
